At the fifth installment of our Futures Seminars, we will dive into a central theme of the new FARSIGHT publication - future aspects of work in the Metaverse. During the webinar you will hear from two experts that are currently working on solutions towards the Metaverse on immersive technologies, new workflows, x-to-earn and the web3 economy.

The new immersive workplace

The groundwork for the development of the Metaverse is being laid as we speak, with a steady merge of our physical and virtual lives. A number of immersive technologies are already being used by some first-mover organisations for e.g. collaborating, learning, and meeting in virtual environments, but what are the different implications for the future? What can we expect to see in the future? As part of the seminar, you will also get exclusive insights in a new report from the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies on future scenarios for the immersive Metaverse.

Web3 and x-to-earn

The Metaverse might not only enable us to work in new ways but might lead to entirely new forms of work as well. The push towards web3, which includes the emergence of new forms of ownership with blockchain, decentralized, and token-based economies like that of NFTs, along with the proliferation of decentralized autonomous organisations (DAOs) governed by systems rather than people, will also likely factor into future developments of the Metaverse.

Consequently, we may see the conventional ‘work-to-earn’ approach to making money be supplemented by other ways of participating in the economy, including ‘play-to-earn’ and other ‘x-to-earn’ logics in decentralized networks.

• Mads Troelsgaard, CEO and co-founder of SynergyXR, a platform that supports companies in establishing their own presence across AR, VR, and Mixed Reality. Troelsgaard believes that the emergence of the so-called ‘Corporate Metaverse’ will drastically change how we work in the future, and that companies and organisations will soon need to get involved for the same reasons that they might have needed an intranet or website 20 years ago.

• Brian Dolan, CEO and founder of WorkReduce, an on-demand solution for staff augmentation in a digital workplace is imagining a future where the gaming and professional worlds will intersect. Picture this: turning on your Xbox, or strapping on your Oculus, and being able to supervise autonomous vehicles or factory robots while getting paid in real time via DeFi (Decentralized Finance) and earning the proper qualifications to perform this work – building work history and credentials – available as NFTs or fully distributed and cryptographically signed objects.
