Work

Where and how we work, as well as the tools we work with, are constantly transforming.

Why we work with Work

We used to stay at the same workplace most of our lives. Today, many of us regularly change workplaces and careers, and life-long learning is required to keep competences up to date. Routine work tasks are increasingly automated in both physical and cognitive work, leaving the more interesting, but also more complex tasks to human workers. In the ‘gig economy’, steady employment is increasingly replaced by project work, short-term contracts, and precarious employment futures.

Workplaces are being transformed to reflect the new ways of work with more changeable tasks, changing work groups, more mobile work, a greater focus on work-life balance. Stress has become the most common reason for long-term absence from work, and workplaces must change to meet this challenge.

With rapid advances in robotics and artificial intelligence, an open question is if automation will destroy more jobs than it creates. Are we heading for a future of mass employment and a winners-take-all economy, or will there be meaningful jobs for everybody in the future?
