Futures Seminar #2: Futures For All

Watch or rewatch the latest Futures Seminar where we explored anticipation as a public good and the democratisation of futures

Humans have always anticipated the future. Yet, the power to influence our perspectives of which futures are (and aren’t) possible has traditionally been held by the few – whether they be politicians, professional futurists, fiction creators, or leading technology companies. So, how can we make the creation of alternative visions of the future more available to the public?

On March 9th, 2022, we explored how to bring futures studies to life from its often written form, as we take it out of its primarily corporate setting and discuss how it can be a force for public good through arts, culture and education.

To shed light on the different perspectives and spaces for public anticipation, we invited four guests who work to enlighten and empower wide audiences to consciously engage with the future for a positive impact. In the first session of the seminar, we were joined by Raul Corrêa-Smith, Content Director at Museum of Tomorrow International (MOTI), and Kristin Alford, Futurist and Director of the Museum of Discovery. In the second session, our guests were Abril Chimal, Chief Pollinator for the Participatory Futures Global Swarm, and Dr. Loes Damhof, UNESCO Chair in Futures Literacy in Higher Education.

This Futures Seminar was hosted by Nicklas Larsen, Senior Advisor at the Institute.

This was the second of the ten yearly Futures Seminars that will explore a variety of themes and trends. The first three are part of the theme ‘Exploring possible futures’, where we will examine the many different aspects of futures studies and foresight as a discipline.

The next Futures Seminar is on March 29th, 2022. Participation is free and exclusively for Futures Members and Futures Partners. Sign up for the seminar here.
